On August 22, the Incheon Port Authority (IPA) announced that the Port of Incheon recorded the highest growth rate in the ‘container volume handled by the world’s top 30 and other 12 major container ports during the first half of the year’, according to the statistics released by Alphaliner.

The worldwide publisher of liner shipping information said that among the world’s top 30 container ports, the Port of Ningbo, Port of Guangzhou and Shanghai International Port revealed high container volume growth rates with 14.4%, 11.7% and 9.6% respectively. Among the other 12 major container ports, in addition, the Port of Incheon, Port of Savannah (the U.S.) and Port of Tanger-Med (Morocco) recorded 17.9%*, 11.6% and 11.0% each.

* The actual container volume growth rate of the Port of Incheon during the first half of this year is 18.7%. For consistency with the pseudo aggregates of other ports’ container handling volume, the volume announced by Alphaliner was quoted.

The IPA predicts that if it achieves this year’s goal (3 million TEU), the Port of Incheon would be able to enter the world’s top 50 container ports. Last year, the South Korean port handled the largest volume (2.68 million TEU, 1TEU = 20-foot container) in its history, and its ranking moved up from 67th (2015) to 57th.

Nam Bong-hyun, President of the IPA, said, “We’ve been continuously working on the expansion of container services such as the opening of Thailand-Vietnam Service (TVX) this month. The construction of the Incheon New Port HJIT slated to grand-open in November is in progress as planned”. He added, “We are going to focus on service improvement for client satisfaction and marketing and achieve 3 million TEU container volumes”.

Alphaliner has investigated more than 550 million TEU container volumes from over 250 sites around the globe and estimated statistics. The company announced that the container handling volume during the first half of this year recorded the highest growth rate (6.7%) since 2011.
